The Apples of Iduna, My Year with a Goddess – Guest Post from Sandi Davis

This guest post by Sandi Davis is part of a series celebrating the My Word Goddess Readings by honouring the gifts of the goddesses that stepped forward in 2014….

My year with the goddess Iduna can be summed up with this encounter.

I am in a heavily wooded forest alive with spring. The sun is shining brightly, the rich color so intense it almost hurts to look. Almost. A young maiden comes from behind one of the trees. She is dressed in soft light layers that float in the breeze, her hair lose and wild. She carries a large, flat basket piled high with apples. Smiling and eyes sparkling, she approaches holding out an apple for me. As soon as I take it she turns and runs behind a tree. I follow but she is gone. I search but she is nowhere to be found. When I stop looking she taps me on the shoulder giggling, hands me another apple and runs behind another tree. Again I follow but she is gone. Again I search only to have her tap me from behind and playfully hand me yet another apple. This goes on for awhile, me trying to find her, she flirting and then flitting away.

Finally she looks me in the eyes and says “Don’t try so hard for inspiration. It is always right here.”

When I first read that my goddess for 2014 would Iduna, a goddess I did not know, I was excited. Truly new energy to bring into the year! I loved her story, a goddess of Avalon who who tends the sacred apples believed to transport knowledge and inspiration. She came with possible words for my year, “fruition,” “inspiration,” “flourish,” “generosity”. All delicious to contemplate and wonderful to hold intention around and after a couple of days I knew “Inspiration” was the one meant for me. I knew Iduna would be my perfect guide. I knew the inspiration I so longed for would appear like magic.

Except magic doesn’t happen on demand no matter what all the abundance and manifesting gurus say. And it very rarely looks as expected. Magic, and I hold inspiration as a form of magic, must be tended yes, but even more so must be allowed. This allowing, true feminine energy allowing, has been Iduna’s gift to me this year. And of course it looked entirely different than expected.

It looked like trying to coerce myself into inspiration and action only to fall into intense fatigue.

It looked like the disappointment of realizing inspiration can not be faked, intellectualized or forced.

It looked like utter wonder and awe that when following the energy of my interests and loves, not my hard and ernest work, I reliably found my way to inspiration.

It looked like seeing how illogical inspiration can be.

It looked like a bolt of energy that startled my cells leasing to an entirely new and utterly unplanned area of study resulting in a new service offering. And another that had me leave behind my well worn comfort rut of stories about myself and begin creating weekly videos. And more.

(Those “bolts” by the way, I have come to realize is not just Iduna doing her flirting, giggling, shoulder tapping, sacred wisdom apple giving, but her pelting an apple right at my head so I realize This Is It! Pay Attention! That apple falling on Newtons head? I have my suspicions Iduna was smiling in the tree above.)

It looked like seeing how my words and wisdom inspire others. How I embody Iduna’s energy and give apples of my own.

It looked like forgetting my word and my goddess over and over and then be reminded of them again when I happened upon a display of apples.

This year with Iduna has also included the best tasting apples I can remember. Seriously, beyond amazing! I’ve fallen completely in love with a fruit I have been neutral about my whole life. Coincidence? I’ll let you decide for yourself. For me, I know evoking the energy of a goddess has the power to change everything. She will rearrange you.

As 2014 closes and my focused time with Iduna wanes, Inanna my goddess for 2015 is making herself known. I feel the swirl of their energies dancing together as one hands me over into the care of the other. I can already feel how well Iduna, with her lessons of allowing and trusting has prepared me well the initiations Inanna is sure to evoke. She has planted the seeds of her sacred apples in my heart ready to grow and share generously.
