Virgins & Lovers: Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Goddess consists of a collection of 3 stories that focus on ‘virgin’ goddesses and 3 stories from the ‘lover’ goddesses. The categorisations that I have made here (and in my forthcoming publication Mothers & Crones) indicate specific lifestages; however, I want to make it absolutely clear that we can connect with any of the goddesses at any point in our lives, regardless of the lifestage society might suppose we are experiencing.
The virgin goddesses may be just as relevant to a woman in her early twenties as a working mother in her forties. The lover goddesses can sing just as powerfully to a single woman in her 30s as they do to a woman celebrating her golden wedding anniversary. The trick is to enter willingly into a conversation with each goddess story, and find the gems that exist within those words just for you.
It’s because of my profound belief that this relationship needs to be forged between you and the goddesses whose stories are contained in the pages of Virgins & Lovers: Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Goddess, that I don’t provide the ‘meaning’ for you. Instead, I’ve provided a playbook that will allow you to explore the stories for yourself, guiding you towards profound, personal meanings that will lead you deep into the heart of your feminine experience of the world.
In my teaching at the university, I very stubbornly refused to provide ‘the answers’, preferring to create a space where I could facilitate my students’ individual relationship with each text they encountered. I learned how to ask the questions of a text that would allow for startling insights, creating new perspectives, new understandings, new appreciations. I have brought that specific skill, along with a few others I have garnered along the way, to the playbook that accompanies the stories.
The playbook contains over 50 journal prompts for you to explore each story to begin the process of revealing the facets of your own inner knowing. It also contains 6 guided goddess visualisations, that will create an experience where you’ll be able to enter into direct conversation with each of the goddesses we will meet on our journey through Virgins & Lovers. Along with these visualisations, you’ll find a comprehensive list of memory prompts to help you capture the details and help you make sense of your meeting with the goddess. And lastly, there are 6 creative exercises for you to try, each offering their own special way of revealing new ways of connecting to your innate feminine wisdom.
Accompanying the storybook and the playbook, are audio recordings of all 6 guided goddess visualisation (plus an extra visualisation, as part of a creative exercise to get you in touch with your sensuality). Each of the visualisations begin with relaxation, grounding, cleansing and protection exercises, which allow you to relax and enjoy an exceptionally profound experience. I have led many women through visualisation experiences and have been told that the tone of my voice, coupled with my soft Scottish accent, are ideal for taking you into a safe and sacred space. Each of the visualisations are different, and they are all between 14 and 17 minutes long.
I have also created printable journal pages each containing a different prompt for you to explore. I’ve even included extra pages for you to capture your thoughts as you engage with each of the goddess stories, and pages for you to sketch down your visualisation experiences using the memory prompts as an aid.

For many years I’d wanted to connect with the goddess stories, but somehow I couldn’t fire my imagination into finding the meaning, or relevance for me. I felt disappointed and if I’m honest, even a little lacking. I suspected there was magic in those tales – something beautiful, primal, visceral – but it wasn’t revealing itself to me.
Until I met Amy.
Joining Amy’s online course, Bloom by Moon, unlocked the secret! I already knew Amy’s prowess as a storyteller was second to none, but what I marvelled at each month, was her special brand of gentle, probing wisdom. Asking questions and creating exercises which allowed me to extract my own meaning and significance from the goddess tales was where I found the greatest satisfaction in Bloom by Moon – and it continues to provide great fodder for my explorations of self.
Amy has gathered together that rich and substantial content in her Virgins & Lovers collection, and its high quality sets it apart from many other online courses. If you’ve struggled to discover your personal story in the ancient tales, or are simply looking for some new inspiration for your creative outlets, then I can vouch for this collection one hundred per cent. ~ Julie Gibbons
Your beautiful words bounce around like fireflies throughout my body and I feel like I am home. How very grateful I am to have found you. When I think of the “senses” exercise, I understand in an instant how long it has been since my eyes have visually enjoyed the gorgeous poetry of artful, achingly sensual, heart inspired language.
Thanks for being a bright shining star!! ~ Jenny HowardVirgins to lovers, our lives fast-forward in one moment. Amy’s compilation of essays, stories and narratives show these changes over a series of moments. Searching for balance, experiencing deep grief, feeling surprise as we recognize the first sparks of desire, this storybook is fanciful and magical in the way that only women are and can be. The prompts and exercise in the playbook are the perfect guide for sinking deeper into connecting the past to the present, the goddesses with ourselves. ~ Jenn Gibson of Roots of She
I have just read and done some of the visualisations in Virgins and Lovers. Great stuff! You have such a gentle and soothing way of bringing women home to themselves. ~ Sarah Newton
The goddesses covered in Virgins & Lovers: Ancient Wisdom for the Modern Goddess are…
- Persephone: A guide for lost souls and queen of the Underworld, Persephone weaves a tale of transition, initiation & independence to take you back to your own first movements towards independence, to help you make sense of how that huge transition continues to impact upon your choices today.
- Brigid: A Celtic goddess whose narratives have become entangled with that of the Christian church, Brigid offers us a way of integrating the changing cycles of the feminine experience by engaging with both the Celtic & Christian interpretations.
- Artemis: My most popular goddess story, Artemis is a goddess that we find it all too easy to identify with, specifically in relation to our work, our careers, our businesses. I have a feeling Artemis will speak to your heart words to bring you balance and clarity.
- Freya: A beautiful Norse goddess who was not afraid to use her sexuality to get what she wanted, Freya is model for living our sexuality in a way that refuses to engage in narratives of shame. Told through the figure of a völva, a Scandic female shaman, Freya’s story frees us from the shackles of a confused cultural perspective of female sexuality.
- Hera: Much maligned, this queen of heaven is so much more that a vengeful shrew. Hera illustrates that all too common experience of losing ourselves to love. Her story deals with the outcomes of the loss of identity instigated by entering into a romantic relationship, and gives us clues on how to rediscover that essential sense of self.
- Aphrodite: The goddess of love who has been held up as an example of male fantasy, Aphrodite invites you to connect to her to forge a deeper understanding of what she has to offer contemporary women. Singing you back to your senses, this beautiful goddess has the power to lead you back to a loving relationship with your body and your femininity.
